Eating Fishy in Zimbabwe

The juvenile of the species are silver on the body and the red on the throat and ventral surface often appears at the age of a few months and is retained throughout its life.

A fish of a kg or over is common.

It is a very adaptable species inhabiting most niches in a water body. Prefers quiet water with good weed cover as it feeds on aquatic weeds. It will be found throughout the Zambezi system, the upper and lower Sabi/Lundi and the Limpopo and its tributaries. It has been introduced into most dams in the country and is numerous where it occurs.

This is one of the most popular cichlid species for angling and is generally taken on worm bait. Moving the worm slowly along the bottom does tend to attract the interest of the fish more than a still bait. Mealie meal can also be used with varied success.

This is one of the best fresh water fish for eating. It can be muddy but the mud can be removed by soaking the fish in several changes of water in which lemon juice or vinegar has been added.
