Eating Fishy in Zimbabwe

Young fish have a silverish body with 6-7 very prominent vertical bars. These disappear in adulthood when the overall body colour darkens to olive/green with white throat and pale yellowish ventral surface.

The size of the fish generally found is up to 3 kg although there have been specimen caught in the 5 to 6 kg range.

Nkupe appears equally at home in swift flowing water, rapids, or quiet, deep, sandy or rocky pools - it can be found in Lake Kariba, Middle Zambezi and other rivers.

It is plentiful in main rivers and large river tributaries.

It feeds on mainly aquatic plants with molluscs, insects aquatic larvae and small fish.

There are a strong group of anglers who believe that the Nkupe, weight for weight are amongst the most exciting sporting fish in Zimbabwe waters. They are strong fighters and test an anglers ability with light tackle. A great variety of bates have proved successful including worms, insects, entrainls of birds, fish fillets and meat.
